He alw...My father was in North Africa during WW II. He always said that he drove the first Allied jeep into Bizerte, Tunisia. And he then very promptly drove the first Allied jeep OUT of Bizerte, beacause there were still German snipers in the town. The jeep was named Janie, after my mother.<br /><br />After he was discharged (wounded twice, with a Purple Heart)he was a nurosurgery guinea pig as doctors worked successfully to save his left arm (the bullet had gone in his wrist and out his elbow). He then went into the National Cemetery service. He said that he knew too many men who hadn't made it back alive, and wanted to be able to do what he could for them. He is buried at his last post in Fort Gibson, Oklahoma. <br /><br />I lived in that cemetery until I was 16, when Daddy retired due to ill health. <br /><br />How's that for an interesting bit on Veteran's Day?<br /><br />RosemaryAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
